Link building for AI search means earning the two things answer engines lean on when they pick sources: pages they can retrieve from a search index, and a brand that the rest of the web keeps talking about. Backlinks still do the first job, because Google's AI features pull from the same index and ranking systems as classic search. The second job is where priorities shift. In Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands, the factor most strongly correlated with being mentioned in AI Overviews was branded web mentions (0.664), ahead of branded anchors and branded search volume. So the practical goal is links and mentions on pages that discuss your category by name.
How AI Answers Choose Their Sources
None of the major answer engines invent a separate web. They retrieve pages from an index, then write a response grounded in what they retrieved.
Google is explicit about this. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features says these features use retrieval-augmented generation that draws on Google's Search index, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link. The companion page on AI features and your website adds that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out," running several related searches across subtopics to assemble one answer. That matters for link building: a single question can pull sources from a dozen related queries, so ranking well across a topic cluster beats ranking for one head term.
ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own crawlers for this. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes OAI-SearchBot as the agent that surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features, separate from GPTBot, which is about model training. Perplexity's crawler docs recommend allowing PerplexityBot if you want to appear in its results. Microsoft now reports grounding directly: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows when your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
Do Backlinks Still Matter for AI Visibility?
Yes, but less directly than the industry assumed a year ago.
The clearest evidence is how the overlap between rankings and citations has moved. Ahrefs' original 2025 study of 1.9 million AI Overview citations found 76.1% of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10 for the query. Its March 2026 update, using a larger dataset and a different parsing method after AI Overviews moved to Gemini 3, put that figure at about 38%. Ahrefs notes the two numbers are not a clean comparison, but the direction is clear: a top-10 ranking is still a strong route into AI answers, and no longer close to a requirement.
That leaves links doing three jobs:
- Getting you crawled and indexed. No index, no retrieval. Links remain how new pages get discovered and judged worth keeping.
- Ranking across the fan-out. Pages that rank for many related queries get more chances to be retrieved when an answer is assembled from subtopic searches.
- Carrying your brand name. A link whose anchor or surrounding sentence names your brand is also a brand mention. Ahrefs found branded anchors correlated at 0.527 with AI Overview mentions, second only to branded web mentions.
The Ahrefs figures are correlations from a filtered sample (domains above DR 40), not proof of cause. Treat them as a signal about what tends to travel together, not a formula.
Links vs Mentions vs Rankings: What Each Does
It helps to separate the signals, because each one moves a different part of AI visibility. The table below summarizes what the sources above support, plus a practical read on effort.
| Signal | What it does for AI search | Evidence | Effort to build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlinks to your pages | Discovery, indexing and classic rankings that feed retrieval | Google's RAG documentation; Ahrefs top-10 overlap (76% in 2025, about 38% in 2026) | Medium to high |
| Branded anchors | Ties a link to your brand name, not just a URL | 0.527 correlation in Ahrefs' 75K brand study | Medium |
| Brand mentions (linked or unlinked) | Teaches the web, and the models reading it, that your brand belongs in a category | 0.664 correlation, the strongest in the same study | Medium |
| Branded search volume | Shows people already look for you | 0.392 correlation in the same study | High (follows the other three) |
| Crawler access | Lets OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot retrieve your pages | Each vendor's crawler documentation | Low |
Earn Mentions in the Places Answers Draw From
If brand mentions are the strongest correlate, the work shifts from "get a link on any relevant page" toward "get named on the pages that define your category." In practice that means a few kinds of placement:
Comparison and "best X" pages. These are exactly the documents an answer engine retrieves for commercial questions. Being one of the products a comparison names, with a sentence about what you do well, is worth more for AI visibility than a link buried in an unrelated guest post.
Industry reporting. Journalists naming your company and your data creates mentions on high-trust sites. Reactive PR through journalist request platforms is one of the more reliable ways to get quoted by name.
Reference content. Original statistics, definitions and tools get cited because they save writers work. A strong linkable asset attaches your brand to a fact, and facts are what AI answers repeat.
Your own unlinked mentions. Every existing mention without a link is a quick win twice over: it already counts as a mention, and turning it into a link through link reclamation adds the ranking benefit.
The common thread is context. A mention that says what your company does, for whom, in the same sentence as your category keyword, gives a retrieval system much more to work with than a bare logo in a sponsor list.
Rethink Anchor Text and Placement Context
Classic link building spent years pushing toward exact-match anchors, then backing away from them as penalties hit. AI search adds another reason to lean branded.
A branded anchor ("according to Acme's 2026 pricing survey") does three things at once: it links, it names the brand, and it states what the brand is known for. An exact-match anchor ("best project management software") links but tells a reader, or a model, nothing about who you are. The Ahrefs correlation for branded anchors supports moving the mix toward brand and brand-plus-topic anchors. A sensible split for your own campaigns is in our guide to anchor text strategy.
Placement context matters as much as the anchor. A suggestion for vetting any placement: read the paragraph around the link and ask whether it would make sense quoted on its own inside an AI answer. If the sentence names your brand, your category and a specific claim, it would. If it is a generic "check out this resource," it would not.
Make Sure AI Crawlers Can Reach You
Links do nothing for AI visibility if the engine cannot fetch the page. A short technical checklist:
- Allow the search crawlers. OpenAI's docs say blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your content out of ChatGPT search answers, while blocking GPTBot only affects training. A blanket rule aimed at AI training bots can block both, so check which user agents your robots.txt actually names.
- Know what Google-Extended does. Google's list of common crawlers describes Google-Extended as a token controlling use of content for Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, with no effect on inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews depend on Googlebot and standard snippet eligibility.
- Check snippet controls. Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex are the levers that limit how a page appears in its AI features. A stray nosnippet on a key page removes it from consideration as a supporting link.
- Skip the shortcuts. Google's optimization guide says llms.txt files are ignored by Google Search and that no special schema markup is required for AI features.
Measure AI Visibility Without Fooling Yourself
AI citations and clicks are different things, and the gap is large. Pew Research Center's analysis of 68,879 Google searches found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on about 1% of visits. Seer Interactive's study of 3,119 informational queries found organic CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell from 1.76% to 0.61% between mid-2024 and September 2025.
So report AI visibility as its own metric, alongside traffic, not as a replacement for it:
- Citations. Bing's AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI summaries. Bing notes the data is sampled and does not represent clicks.
- Prompt tracking. Pick 20 to 50 questions your buyers ask, run them monthly in the engines that matter to you, and record whether you are named and which source pages are cited. This is a suggested routine, not an industry standard.
- Mention growth. Count new brand mentions per month, linked and unlinked, on pages relevant to your category.
- Branded search. Rising branded queries in Search Console suggest the mentions are reaching people.
Where to Spend the Next Quarter
A reasonable rebalance, offered as a suggestion: keep the link work that gets your important pages ranking across their topic cluster, then shift a share of effort toward placements that name your brand in context, on comparison pages, in industry coverage and on reference content. Fix crawler access first, since it costs an afternoon. Then track citations and mentions monthly so you can tell whether the shift is working.
None of this replaces quality control. A mention on a spammy page helps no one, and answer engines retrieve from the same index that discards low-quality sites. If you buy placements, hold every one to documented placement standards.
